The below points are guidelines to help manage expectations, but if you have some grand plans and an alternative payment arrangement, there’s no harm in asking.
Expertise
Please look at my Portfolio for a sample of my photography. If you have a particular style or look you are after, and that is not what you see in my portfolio, please consider whether I am the right photographer for you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy to have a go at practically anything and will try and give you something you appreciate. However, if you’re after something particular and I don’t have a history of producing that sort of work, it is going to take me longer to produce your images and I cannot guarantee they’ll be to your satisfaction.
It would help me greatly if you have examples of the sorts of images you’re looking for. I have some neurodiverse tendencies, and sometimes the mental image I have of what someone describes to me does not correspond to the image they thought they were describing. Show me the image!
Availability
I am generally available after hours and on weekends. For weekday work, I will generally require several weeks to several months advance notice. If travel is involved, that further complicates things. The kids and the pets get upset if I go away without making arrangements to care for them! Please give me as much notice as you can.
Please don’t be offended if I say I’m not able to assist. I have a family, and a day job who do expect me to actually turn up and work for them occasionally. Sometimes it just isn’t possible to fit other things in, no matter how much I might really want to do them.
Fees
Unless you are a genuine charitable organisation, I will not even consider working for you for free. Alright, if you’re able to guarantee my name and work prominently in front of 1 million people, I might consider it, but otherwise – no. “Exposure” doesn’t pay for food or travel costs, let alone the very expensive camera gear, insurance, and other costs of running a business. I am, however, prepared to discuss arrangements, and my fees for a particular job will reflect what I see as the merits of the work, my degree of expertise in that area of photography, and general availability.
